ICFPA Announces Tool to Calculate Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Pulp and Paper Mills
Washington, DC,
November 28, 2002
The International Council of Forest and Paper Associations (ICFPA) today announced the development of a methodology for calculating greenhouse gas emissions from pulp and paper mills. ICFPA recommends the calculation tool -- designed to serve as a simple and unified industry approach to calculate greenhouse gas emissions -- be recognized by governments and international organizations establishing protocols and developing calculation techniques as the appropriate tools for calculating greenhouse gas emissions for pulp and paper mills.
“The development of this innovative calculation tool is another example of the forest products industry taking the worldwide lead in developing simple, transparent methods to calculate greenhouse gas emissions,” said ICFPA President W. Henson Moore, also President and CEO of the American Forest & Paper Association. “The tool can be used on any scale, from determining emissions from a specific mill, from a specific company, or for an industry as a whole."
In early 2001, ICFPA members began a project to develop an international methodology for estimating greenhouse gas emissions. The project was undertaken to create a unified process to collect credible data that are comparable worldwide and to establish a method that addresses the industry's specific attributes. The process assures that the assumptions and calculations used to estimate the industry’s emissions are consistent, accurate, and easily understood.
The industry-specific calculation tool was prepared by the National Council for Air and Stream Improvement (NCASI), a U.S.-based research institute, with the support of industry experts from around the world. It is based on protocols developed by the World Resources Institute/ World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WRI/WBCSD) and the United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and was peer reviewed and endorsed by the GHG Protocol Initiative -- an international collaboration led by WRI and WBCSD. Additionally, the tool will be available on WRI’s website (www.wri.org) as the pulp and paper mill module under the GHG Protocol Initiative.
The forest products industry plays an important and complex role in the global carbon cycle. Forests, which supply the industry’s primary raw material, also store significant amounts of carbon and provide much- needed products for society. Forests provide multiple environmental, social, and economic benefits, and the industry’s emissions should be viewed in the context of the overall forest products’ carbon cycle.
ICFPA is comprised of trade associations in 39 countries representing industries accounting for 75 percent of the world's paper and more than 50 percent of the world's wood production. ICFPA serves as a forum for joint action in areas ranging from communications to data collection. ICFPA is committed to the principles of sustainable development and to working with other stakeholders to ensure that environmental, social and economic benefits of our natural resources are available to current and future generations.
